Brightspace Pulse is a mobile app that can help learners stay connected and on track with their courses in Brightspace. It provides one easy view of course calendars, readings, assignments, evaluations, grades, and announcements. The app can help learners make better decisions about how to handle workload, when to submit assignments, and when to prepare for tests. Real-time alerts can let learners know when classes are canceled, rooms are moved, or new/updated course content and grades are made available. The schedule view and weekly visualization provides learners with a quick, at-a-glance view of what is due today, this week, and later in the term across all their courses.
Do’s:
Regular Engagement: Check the app regularly for updates, notifications, and announcements.
Customize Notifications: Adjust notification settings to receive alerts for important events and deadlines.
Time Management: Utilize the app's features for tracking deadlines, organizing tasks, and managing study schedules.
Feedback and Evaluation: Review grades and feedback provided by instructors.
Don’ts
Completing Homework: Avoid completing assignments that require extensive writing within Pulse.
Complex Document Creation: Refrain from creating complex documents or presentations directly within the app because it lacks advanced formatting features.
Multimedia Usage: Do not rely on your phone to watch all assigned multimedia resources. Issues with buffering and your phone data plan could prevent you from viewing critical material.
Critical Exams or Tests: Refrain from solely relying on the app for critical exams or tests, especially if there are concerns about connectivity or compatibility.
Sole Reliance on Mobile Devices: Avoid relying solely on the mobile version of the app for tasks better suited for desktop or laptop computers, such as extensive writing or working with spreadsheets.
Offline Work: Refrain from attempting offline work without ensuring necessary resources and functionalities are available offline. See Brightspace FAQs “What files can I view offline?”
Large File Management: Avoid managing large files or datasets (100MB or more) since the app may not be optimized for extensive data handling.
Remember: It’s essential to note that it does not fully replace viewing courses on a regular laptop or desktop browser. Pulse uses calendar events, encompassing dates from Content, Checklist, Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes in D2L Brightspace. However, this data is only available if instructors have set dates for these items. Items without associated dates will not appear in the Brightspace Pulse App.
To ensure you don't miss vital course content, utilize the Pulse App as a mobile reference tool rather than relying on it exclusively for course completion.
Do’s
Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI):Encourage students to regularly engage with the app for updates, notifications, and course-related activities. Depending on how you structure your course, you can utilize Pulse to help ensure you are meeting RSI requirements.
Review Content: Ensure due dates and other content are available and displaying in the Pulse app. This can be done by “Entering Student View in the Pulse App”.
Resource Integration: Ensure course materials, assignments, and additional resources are accessible through the app for easy student access.
Don’ts
Ignore Device Differences: Avoid assuming all students will have equal access. Consider potential mobile device limitations for certain tasks. Depending on what device a student is using (iOS or Android) there may be differences such as accessibility features or how items are downloaded.
File Size Considerations: Caution students to avoid reviewing large files or datasets (100MB or more) within the app.
