"So Much More Than a Learning Management System! Break free from the limitations of an LMS with D2L's Brightspace, a learning innovation platform built to help you create highly personalized experiences that unlock learner potential at scale."
Packed with powerful tools, customizable content and best-in-class service and support, Brightspace leaves the limitations of a traditional LMS in the dust. Create personalized learning at scale and help learners realize their true potential with a learning innovation platform that’s evolved as purposefully as education itself.
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is pleased to announce on Jan. 25, 2024, the Board of Trustees approved a four-year agreement making D2L’s Brightspace the College’s new Learning Management System (LMS).
Tri-C would like to thank the Online Learning and Academic Technology (OLAT) team, the Distance Learning Steering Committee, LMS faculty reviewers, LMS executive sponsors and all the faculty, staff and students involved in the LMS review.
Over the past few years, this massive project has involved preparing, teaching and engineering three pilot systems — Anthology’s Blackboard Ultra, Canvas by Instructure and D2L’s Brightspace. Tri-C is proud of the collaboration of all the stakeholders involved in this project.
D2L’s Brightspace features and functionality improve faculty and student interaction beyond the capabilities of the current LMS. Some highlights include:
Advanced Customization Options
D2L’s Brightspace gives faculty options to organize and customize learning materials in individual courses and within departments. Such flexibility allows D2L’s Brightspace to support diverse pedagogies and learning pathways to personalize the educational experience and to promote student success. Additionally, D2L’s Brightspace can be customized for consistency within schools, departments and programs, benefiting the new school model.
Student Success and Advanced Communication Outlets
D2L’s Brightspace includes an intelligent agent tool to personalize and enhance communication, promote a higher level of student engagement, and boost student retention and success efforts. With the intelligent agent tool, faculty can customize automated student messages such as welcome and reminder messages and notes of encouragement when a student achieves a certain grade or when there is a lack of course activity.
Innovation and Strategic Plan Alignment
D2L’s Brightspace has an innovative design and a future-thinking model that aligns with Tri-C's strategic plan for future program growth, such as competency-based education (CBE).
Preparing Workforce-Ready Students
D2L’s Brightspace includes badging and certificate integrations, allowing students to demonstrate a portfolio of workforce-ready skills.
Accessibility
D2L’s Brightspace integrates the latest global accessibility standards into its products, increasing
For two years, OLAT conducted an LMS review to evaluate platforms. The review began by researching various vendors and identifying the features requested by students and faculty.
Anthology's Blackboard Ultra, Instructure's Canvas and D2L’s Brightspace were tested extensively over six semesters, with a core group of 24 faculty teaching live courses in each of the three platforms.
D2L’s Brightspace was selected based on scorecards and feedback forms submitted by faculty, students, administration and staff.
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) is transitioning its learning management system (LMS) from Anthology’s Blackboard Learn to D2L’s Brightspace in three phases:
Phase 1 — Early Adoption in Summer 2024
Phase 2 — Fall 2024
Phase 3 — Spring 2025
During the first two implementation phases, the College will simultaneously run Blackboard Learn Original and D2L’s Brightspace. Starting Spring 2025, all courses will be taught using D2L's Brightspace.
To prepare for the upcoming transition to D2L’s Brightspace, the OLAT team will send information to faculty about the process, asking when they would like to transition to D2L’s Brightspace and on which courses. This communication will include information on D2L’s Brightspace course migration options.
In the Summer and Fall 2024 terms, courses may be taught in either Blackboard Learn or Brightspace. Depending on students’ course schedules, this may mean that all their courses are in Blackboard, all their courses are in Brightspace, or some of their courses are in Blackboard and some of their courses are in Brightspace.
As advocates of our Tri-C students’ success, we would like to share with you how you can help our students access their courses during our transition phases. While we emailed all our active students with the course access instructions below, we also wanted to share them with you if you encounter a student needing help.
Tri-C has many resources on this page to help faculty access and navigate Brightspace. We want to make everyone’s experience during our transition to Brightspace seamless. Contact us at 216-987-HELP (4357) or helpdesk@tri-c.edu if you have any questions or need help.
