Natural Resources Cadet/Officer Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES: Natural Resources Officer Cadets receive extensive law enforcement training in order to prepare for a career as a Natural Resources Officer. Cadets attend an in-resident training academy for approximately six months. After graduating, cadets are promoted to the Natural Resources Officer position and continue to receive additional on-the-job training. Natural Resources Officers are commissioned peace officers with primary responsibilities in the following areas:
- Law Enforcement and Public Service: As a Natural Resources Officer, you will be responsible for patrolling and enforcing laws on all waters of the state as well as state park, state forest, scenic river, and natural areas and preserve properties. Natural Resources Officers enforce laws on ODNR property to not only keep users of the natural resources safe but also to preserve Ohio’s natural resources for future generations.
- Education and Public Relations: Natural Resources Officers teach the public as well as other recreational and conservation groups in formal as well as casual settings. They provide media interviews promoting an array of educational information for boating safety and natural resources conservation. The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft is the lead agency for Ohio maritime security and instructs other state, county and municipal agencies in maritime law enforcement.
- Emergency Response: The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft supports emergency operations during flooding, natural disasters, search and rescue situations, and recovery situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of associate core program in a natural resources area (parks and recreation, forestry, fisheries, wildlife, environmental, conservation biology, natural science (e.g. biology, geology, wildlife, botany, ecology, agronomy), or criminal justice/law enforcement) OR 18 months training/experience in a natural resources area (parks and recreation, forestry, fisheries, wildlife, environmental, conservation biology, or criminal justice/law enforcement) ) OR 18 months experience in the United States military (e.g., US Army Military Police (Provost Marshal) or Criminal Investigation Division, US Air Force Security Forces or Office of Special Investigations, US Navy Master-at-Arms or Naval Criminal Investigative Service; US Marine Corps Military Police or Criminal Investigation Division, Army Counter Intelligence, US Coast Guard Investigative Services)
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Course per Section 124.41 of Ohio Revised Code
- Must be able to continuously swim 300 yards in 12 minutes or less; continuously tread water for five minutes; and perform surface dive and retrieve object at a depth of 9 feet of water from treading water position
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
