In the Abdominal-Extended and OB/GYN sonography program students learn to evaluate organs of the abdominal cavity (i.e. liver, spleen, kidney, pancreas, gallbladder, aorta) blood vessels and superficial structures (i.e. breast, thyroid, scrotum) as well as female reproductive system, pelvic cavity, and growth and condition of a pregnancy. They will learn to assess for benign or cancerous pathologies like tumors, cysts, blood clots, infections, fluid and interventional procedures to drain fluid, remove or biopsy tumors, mark locations of tumors or use as guidance to remove foreign objects.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the ARDMS registry exams of Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) Physics exam and specialty registries in Abdomen and Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Program Goal
To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the Abdominal Sonography-Extended and Obstetrics and Gynecology concentration.
