Nondestructive Testing NDT
Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is the application of scientific techniques to ensure the quality/integrity of products and/or components without damaging the item.
NDT technician certification is governed by the National Aerospace Standard 410 (NAS 410).
This standard is recognized worldwide by the NDT Industry.
The purpose of NAS 410 is to:
- Establish qualifications for certified NDT Technicians
- Establish technical training and experience for NDT Technicians
- Establish content for technical training
The most frequently used NDT techniques are:
- Visual Techniques (VT)
- Liquid Penetrate (PT)
- Magnetic Particle (MT)
- Ultrasonic (UT)
- Radiography, X-Ray (RT)
NDT Technicians may be certified in all or some of the techniques based on their career interest and needs of their employers.
NDT Technicians are certified as Level 1, 2, or 3. The level is a function of technical training and experience. Level 1 is entry level. Level 2 has additional experience. Level 3 requires a minimum of an associate degree in a technical discipline.
Technical Training is provided by Cuyahoga Community College. The Field Experience is gained through paid internships, unpaid internships, or direct hiring by an employer.
