Westshore Campus Hosting Presentation on India’s Caste System
Sugra Bibi to discuss the impact of labor classism on Indian society
To explore India's 3,000-year-old caste system and its societal effects on the 1.4 billion people living there, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will welcome Sugra Bibi, Ph.D., to the Westshore Campus.
Bibi's presentation, "Caste, Labor and the Plantation Economies of India," takes place Thursday, Feb. 22, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in SLT 133.
The presentation will explore the impact of caste laborers in India, discussing various labor systems, including cher, indenture and factory work. The talk will also analyze the historical and present-day experiences of laborers, as well as the role of policies and social movements in addressing poor work conditions, caste discrimination and labor injustices.
Bibi has a Ph.D. in history from the University of London and an M.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania. She has taught at American University, Cleveland State University, Johns Hopkins University, Temple University, the Community College of Philadelphia and various high schools.
