Triceratops Baseball Team Wins OCCAC Championship
Program captures first conference title since 2016 with 15-7 win
The Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) baseball team is riding high into the postseason after winning the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) championship for the first time in eight seasons.
The Triceratops (31-15) beat Bryant & Stratton College 15-7 in the championship game on May 2 in Sandusky, scoring 14 runs in the final four innings in the decisive win.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Tri-C’s offense took off, scoring six runs in the third and three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Kyle Koehler had a game-high six RBI and two doubles, with Braden Reed (three hits) and Brendan Hazuda adding two RBI each. Pitcher Skyler Kries got the win in two innings of work, allowing one earned run.
Tri-C has won eight OCCAC baseball championships.
In the semifinal game against Clark State, Connor Bozak hit a two-run home run in the third inning to open the scoring as Tri-C claimed a 4-0 victory. In the sixth inning, Garret Grinstead had a two-run double that gave ace pitcher Jackson Judy all the support he needed. Judy, a University of Dayton commit, threw seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters.
The Triceratops are the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Region 12 Division II Tournament and will face Grand Rapids Community College in a three-game series beginning Friday, May 10. Game 1 starts at 1 p.m., and Game 2 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Game 3 is Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., if necessary.
