Tri-C Sport and Exercise Studies Program Director Shares Insights for Successful New Year's Resolutions
Chris Faciana spoke with Ideastream Public Media about the benefits of outdoor exercise
Surveys show that health and fitness goals are the most popular New Year's resolutions. Chris Faciana, the program director for the Sport and Exercise Studies program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®), has seen his fair share of resolutions.
He recommends simpler goals, especially for those who aren't regularly active. He also suggested outdoor exercise as a great way to start a fitness journey.
"It was always a big rush around Jan. 1 to schedule appointments (for training)," Faciana told Ideastream Public Media. "A lot of times, we set these lofty goals for our New Year's resolutions, and as soon as we have a barrier, we feel that shame and guilt."
A monthly gym membership can typically cost between $15 and $80 for a premium gym, according to the article. One of the most common reasons that people cancel a gym membership is that it's "too expensive." Exercising outdoors can be a low-cost alternative to help meet one's fitness goals, Faciana said.
"All you need is a good pair of shoes and just kind of get out there on the trails," Faciana said. "Luckily, here in Ohio, we have lots of really nice ones."
Tri-C's Sport and Exercise Studies program, which is part of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and fitness specialist certification.
