Tri-C Recognized With Award for Excellence in eLearning
ITC to honor Tri-C at conference on March 4
CLEVELAND — As higher education expands and improves its online learning offerings, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) can share its success and insights with other institutions.
The College was selected to receive the 2024 Award for Excellence in eLearning — Innovative eLearning Technology from the Instructional Technology Council (ITC). The award will be presented at the ITC Annual Conference Awards for Excellence in eLearning special recognition luncheon on Tuesday, March 4.
The award recognizes the outstanding use of a new technology tool or delivery system to achieve a new method of student delivery or learning.
In 2022, Tri-C began reviewing vendors for a new learning management system with an intensive review process. In 2024 D2L’s Brightspace was selected as the College’s new LMS. A cross-functional team of faculty, staff, students and administrators worked together to research, test, select and implement the new LMS by Spring 2025. The process took six semesters for the review and three additional semesters for the structured implementation. The College’s LMS review and implementation team was comprised of the faculty development, instructional design, online learning, information technology teams and the distance learning steering committee.
Delia Pfister, Ph.D., associate vice president of Academic Professional Development, Instructional Design & Online Learning at Tri-C, and Mario Bynum, the executive director for Online Learning and Academic Technology, will present at the ITC conference on Monday, March 3, and at the League for Innovation Conference on March 10 with Kevin Dranuski, the director of instructional design and learning excellence. Their presentation, "Empowering Change Through Shared Governance: Tri-C's LMS Review and Implementation," offers insights and lessons from Tri-C's unified faculty — and student-centric approach to its large-scale LMS review and implementation, resulting in shared Collegewide success.
"This LMS review and implementation project is one of Tri-C's largest full-scale projects and a shining example of shared governance, embracing student, faculty and staff voices in the entire process," said Pfister.
