Tri-C Receives $360K Grant for Mental Health Services
Two-year funding will help College increase awareness of student, employee resources
More than half of community college students nationwide have an identifiable mental health condition — but less than half of those students say they know how to access mental health resources.
The same holds true at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®), where an informal student survey showed that only half of the students knew how and where to find the College’s many resources to support mental and behavioral health.
Tri-C will use a $359,462 grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education to increase awareness of its mental health support on campuses. Through the 2024-2025 academic year, grant funds will:
- Educate students, faculty, staff and community members on Tri-C's mental health resources
- Develop a student peer network on Tri-C's four campuses to encourage students to seek support
- Partner with students enrolled in the College's Cleveland Codes Software Developers Academy to update the Help Is Here mobile app
The College offers an array of mental health supports for students, employees and community members through its Help Is Here program. These include:
- Mental health screenings
- Relaxation tips
- Relationship support
- Substance use and abuse services
- Suicide prevention
- Short-term counseling services
- Services for specific populations
"There is a documented need — both nationally and here at Tri-C — for mental and behavioral health supports in higher education, so our aim is to make sure our community knows where to find help," said Eric Gordon, senior vice president of Student Development and Education Pipeline.
In addition to updating the Help Is Here app, Tri-C will create student-produced educational videos, a social media campaign, posters, flyers, badges, signs and other materials to promote the Help Is Here platform and its services.
More information on Tri-C's mental and behavioral health services is available on the Help Is Here website.
