Tri-C Manager Discusses the Power of Music in Fitness
Chris Faciana explains how upbeat music enhances workouts at Xtreme Compound Fitness
Xtreme Compound Fitness in Mayfield Heights draws fitness enthusiasts from all over with its unique fusion of step aerobics with hip-hop music.
In an interview with Ideastream’s The Sound of Ideas program, Chris Faciana, the program manager of the Sport and Exercise Studies program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®), explains why music plays such a significant role in fitness.
"There are multiple studies indicating that the right type of music can boost muscle endurance and improve performance in both cardio and resistance training workouts," Faciana said.
The key is that the music must resonate with the listener to effectively enhance performance, he said.
Xtreme Compound Fitness has been buzzing with energy during its 11-month anniversary celebration as patrons in black and yellow gather for evenings of high-intensity workouts. This blend of fitness and live music creates a concert-like atmosphere, making workouts enjoyable and motivating for participants.
Faciana believes this trend could catch on more broadly.
"Integrating live music into workouts leverages research on music’s ability to increase motivation and enhance performance," he said.
Additionally, Faciana pointed out the growing popularity of group fitness classes, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"People are seeking social connections through their workouts," he said, adding to the importance of community in fitness.
