Tri-C Launches Utility Technician Program To Address Statewide Need for Broadband Expansion
College receives $658,000 grant from state to become NE Ohio’s designated training location
To meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in utility industries that will help strengthen Ohio’s broadband access, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) is launching a utility technician program this fall.
Ohio is investing $500 million in state and federal funding to modernize its utility infrastructure. As part of that investment, Tri-C will receive a $658,000 grant from the Ohio Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation and the Ohio Department of Higher Education to serve as the designated training location for the 16-county Northeast Ohio region.
"There is a substantial investment to upgrade utilities in the region, state and the country, and Tri-C wants to make sure that workers are trained for careers in this work," said Ray Nejadfard, dean of the Tri-C School of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering and Computer Science. "Job opportunities in this field are abundant and Tri-C plays a critical role in meeting workforce needs. We’re excited to begin this work."
The program will be available as a one-year certificate and associate degree that offers hands-on learning in essential areas, including overhead and underground electrical communication, natural gas distribution, wastewater management and water systems. Students will learn to operate specialized equipment such as bucket trucks and directional boring machines. They will also master critical skills in underground utility location and fiber optic technology, while honing communication, computational and troubleshooting skills.
Other program highlights include:
- Small class sizes
- Hands-on learning
- Industry-recognized certifications
- Co-op and internship placement assistance
- Scholarships available for eligible students
Additionally, students pursuing the associate degree will have the option to add truck driving instruction to their coursework, preparing them for the Commercial Driver’s License Class A (CDL A) state test.
There are an estimated 5,300 jobs across the broadband industry directly related to the state's investment, according to the Strengthening Ohio’s Broadband and 5G Workforce report from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation. Jobs are projected to grow in the region by 6% through 2032.
Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce in roles such as field service technician, field installation technician, fiber technician, telecommunication technician and more. The median salary for graduates with an associate degree is $60,000 in the region, which can increase to $80,000 with additional experience and qualifications.
