Tri-C Hosting ‘Great Grocery Giveaway’ With Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging
Boxes of food will be distributed April 12 at Western Campus in Parma
Boxes of food and supplies will be distributed to Cuyahoga County residents age 60 and older during a “Great Grocery Giveaway” at 10 a.m. on April 12 at the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®).
Sponsored by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging (WRAAA), the event is part of a larger effort to fill food security gaps in the community. One in six U.S. seniors lives with the daily threat of hunger and malnourishment, leaving them prone to acute or chronic illnesses that could drastically reduce their life expectancy.
Each box includes approximately $80 worth of groceries and essential supplies. Contents may include items such as pasta, spaghetti sauce, rice and beans, peanut butter, jelly, bread and household cleaning items. Boxes are limited to one per person.
Register by 5 p.m. Monday, April 10. Call 216-586-3747 or email greatgrocerygiveaway@areaagingsolutions.org for more information.
“Many seniors are living on the edge of poverty,” said E. Douglas Beach, CEO of WRAAA. “As inflation challenges homes already struggling to pay bills, the elderly are having a particularly hard time putting food on the table. The fervent hope is that this program eases some of the daily struggle.”
Western Campus is located at 11000 Pleasant Valley Road in Parma.
The Great Grocery Giveaway is a community service opportunity for the Tri-C community and part of a week of events leading up to the inauguration of Michael A. Baston as Tri-C's fifth president on Friday, April 14. Visit Tri-C’s inauguration webpage for information.
WRAAA is a private, nonprofit corporation designated as the planning, coordinating and administrative agency for federal and state aging and disability programs in Cuyahoga and four surrounding counties.
FOX 8 and WOIO-19 provided coverage.
