Tri-C Hosting ‘Great Grocery Giveaway’ With Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging
Boxes of food will be distributed Aug. 4 at Eastern Campus in Highland Hills
Volunteers will distribute 500 boxes of food and supplies to Cuyahoga County residents age 60 and older during a Great Grocery Giveaway on Aug. 4 on the Eastern Campus of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®). Food distribution starts at 10 a.m.
Sponsored by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging (WRAAA), the event is part of a larger effort to fill food security gaps in the community. One in six U.S. seniors lives with the daily threat of hunger and malnourishment, leaving them prone to acute or chronic illnesses that could drastically reduce their life expectancy.
Each box includes about $80 worth of groceries and essential supplies, such as pasta, rice and beans, peanut butter, bread and household cleaning items. Boxes are limited to one per person.
"Food-insecure older adults are the silent majority here in Cuyahoga County," said E. Douglas Beach, CEO of WRAAA. "With the help of our partners at Tri-C, our initiative ensures that their voices are heard. Many older adults are struggling to find where their next meal is coming from, and our hope is that this effort will not only put food in their pantries but help raise awareness regarding food insecurity in Northeast Ohio."
Eastern Campus is located at 4250 Richmond Road in Highland Hills.
WRAAA is a private nonprofit corporation designated as the planning, coordinating and administrative agency for federal and state aging and disability programs in Cuyahoga and four surrounding counties.
