Tri-C Graduate Is Pioneering Voice Writing in Iowa Courts
Kaycee Kruger is helping address state’s court reporter shortage
Kaycee Kruger, a 2023 Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) graduate, is leading the charge as one of the first certified verbatim reporters in Iowa courts.
Traditionally, court reporters use steno machines, but a new method — known as certified verbatim reporting or voice writing — is gaining popularity. This method involves speaking into a microphone, silenced by a mask, with real-time transcription converting speech to text.
New methods like voice writing are gaining ground in Iowa due to a critical shortage of court reporters, according to a story in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Voice writing presents an alternative for people who lack the typing speed requirements to become certified stenographers. It was a more accessible option for Kruger, leading to less physical strain.
The article notes that voice writing could change recruitment strategies for court reporters, welcoming individuals with voice writing experience, such as veterans.
Tri-C's Captioning and Court Reporting program offers two-year degree and certificate programs in steno writing, voice writing, digital reporting and transcription that can be completed online.
