Spring 2024 Commencement: Michelle Miller's Transition From Homemaker to Interior Designer
After completing the Women in Transition program at Tri-C, Miller enrolled to receive her associate degree
After dedicating her time to her family and being a stay-at-home mom, Michelle Miller has found the inspiration and drive to earn a degree and start a new career.
Miller enrolled in the Women in Transition (WIT) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) in Fall 2021 before gaining the courage to enroll as a student in Spring 2022. As a student, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Interior Design Club. "I have always had a strong interest in interior design and wanted to study this for a very long time," she said. "As my sons have gotten older, I am glad to have found a way to create the opportunity to earn the skills I need to begin this new career."
Miller will graduate with an Associate of Applied Business during the College's Spring Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center.
With her degree, Miller plans on delving into the interior design world.
"I will be working as an interior design assistant, adding to my technical and design skills," she said. "I also plan to complete my four-year degree."
Describe your Tri-C experience. Has a specific person, class or event played a role in your success?
I am happy to say a lot of people at Tri-C have been supportive, encouraging and invested in my success. Nancy Kraig, the head of the Interior Design program, has been amazing. She has been instrumental in making this experience so memorable. The leaders of the WIT program have provided the inspiration and motivation for this journey. Some professors have also played a pivotal role by encouraging and assisting me in finding my strengths and talents.
How has Tri-C changed your life?
This time at Tri-C has been an investment in myself and my future. I have gained more confidence and valuable skills and met some great people who have become good friends. Though I'm proud and excited to complete my program, I'm also a bit sad to be leaving a place that has been so invested in my future success.
Do you have any pearls of wisdom to share with students considering a similar degree or certificate program?
It is so important to show up and be an active class member! Design is a collaborative field — there is rarely one right answer. In this field, you will always be working with many different trades, vendors and clients. It's so important to learn the confidence to share your ideas.
Tri-C will celebrate the academic achievements of its newest graduates during Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check our News and Events page leading up to the event for more highlights from the Class of 2024.
