Spring 2024 Commencement: Destiny Griffiths Cultivates a Passion for Arboriculture at Tri-C
The Plant Science and Landscape Technology Program paved the way for Griffiths to pursue a career as a tree climber
After graduating from high school in 2020, Destiny Griffiths knew she wanted to attend Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®), but she wasn’t sure what field to pursue.
Griffiths enjoyed being outside, and after researching, she discovered arboriculture. Without any prior knowledge of the field, Griffiths decided to enroll in the Plant Science and Landscape Technology program at Tri-C.
What she found within the program was a new passion for preserving trees and a drive to always learn.
“I am passionate about the field of arboriculture. I want to preserve trees. I love being outside while I am working and during my free time,” she said.
Griffiths will graduate with an Associate of Applied Science during the College’s Spring Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center.
She will be a tree climber at the Davey Tree Expert Company while she pursues an International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification.
What made you choose Tri-C? When did you first enroll?
I graduated from high school in 2020 and wanted to earn a degree through Tri-C. In the fall of 2021, I chose to major in the Plant Science and Landscape Technology program.
Describe your Tri-C experience. Has a specific person, class or event played a role in your success?
The National Collegiate Landscape Competition, held by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, has changed my life. I have grown immensely as a green industry professional. This event has fueled my interest in the industry, allowed me to hone new skills and prepared me to succeed in my future endeavors. I am incredibly appreciative of our coaches, sponsors and teammates.
How has Tri-C changed your life?
The plant science program at Tri-C has granted me lifelong friends, skills in various parts of the green industry, a passion for saving trees and a never-ending thirst for opportunities to apply my skills and gain more knowledge. I would have never known what I was capable of if I had never left my comfort zone. I am a well-rounded individual, thanks to my professors at Tri-C.
Do you participate in student life at Tri-C (or have you in the past)? If so, please describe your experiences.
I have attended various plant science club outings and meetings. Because of my involvement, I’ve been able to tour impressive gardens and get to know my peers better.
Do you have any pearls of wisdom to share with students considering a similar degree or certificate program?
Get out of your comfort zone, try new things, meet new people, and apply for that internship, job or other opportunity. The worst that could happen is that you hear a “no.” But you'll never get anything if you don't try.
Tri-C will celebrate the academic achievements of its newest graduates during Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check our News and Events page leading up to the event for more highlights from the Class of 2024.
