Spring 2024 Commencement: Amani Kasigwa Pursues Path to Health Care Advocacy
After immigrating to Cleveland in 2019 and facing language barriers while seeking medical care, Tri-C graduate wants to help others in similar situations
Foreign students in higher education often face language barriers. But for Amani Kasigwa, that language barrier motivated her to help others facing the same challenges.
Immigrating from Tanzania in 2019, Kasigwa said her family had a hard time accessing medical care due to the language divide. The difficulties her family faced inspired Kasigwa to pursue a degree in health care management to help others in similar situations.
She enrolled in the English as a Second Language program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) in 2021 and plans to transfer to Cleveland State University after graduation.
Kasigwa will graduate with an Associate of Arts during the College’s Spring Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center.
What made you choose Tri-C?
The decision to attend Tri-C was rooted in the unwavering support from my parents and the institution’s reputation for affordability and a friendly environment. The fact that I could live with my family while pursuing my studies was a significant advantage, and I found the Tri-C community to be incredibly welcoming.
Do you participate in student life at Tri-C?
I have been actively involved in various clubs and organizations, including the Mandel Scholars Academy, TRIO, Student Government as a senator, the Philosophy Club and the Black American Council. These experiences have helped my understanding of the community and strengthened my leadership skills. I was also named Student of the Year at the Western Campus in 2024. Beyond academics, I find joy in singing in church and cherishing moments with my loved ones. It is in these connections that I find the inspiration and motivation to pursue my dreams and make a positive impact on the world.
Do you have any pearls of wisdom to share with students considering a similar degree or certificate program?
Learn to be grateful for each moment. Students sometimes forget to be grateful for the efforts they make every day. I believe no matter what situation a student might find themselves in, there is always something to be grateful for.
Tri-C will celebrate the academic achievements of its newest graduates during Commencement on May 17 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check our News and Events page leading up to the event for more highlights from the Class of 2024.
