Alex Johnson Reflects on Career with Community College Daily
President Emeritus speaks about navigating challenges and career
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) President Emeritus Alex Johnson was among seven retiring community college presidents who reflected on their careers in higher education.
In an interview with Community College Daily, Johnson — who led two colleges through major catastrophes — talked about a leader’s role in crisis management. He was chancellor of Delgado Community College in New Orleans when the region was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and piloted Tri-C through the COVID-19 pandemic.
"What you have to do is really look inward at the institution to identify those stalwart individuals who are committed to responding to these challenges," Johnson told Community College Daily. "You identify them by their courage, their fortitude and their ability to relate to individuals at a meaningful level."
Johnson, who was president of Tri-C from 2013 to 2022, said that a crisis is "an opportunity to respond to a challenge and also to advance the institution."
