After Pandemic Hiatus, Film Crew Intensive Training Relaunches in February
Registration now open for Tri-C Film Academy’s six-week course
After coming to a halt in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) Film Academy's six-week Film Crew Intensive Training course will relaunch Feb. 28 at the Metropolitan Campus in Cleveland.
The course prepares future film and media technicians and crew members for entry-level positions by providing a unique opportunity to learn directly from professionals working on Cleveland feature films and commercial sets. No prior experience is required.
Tri-C developed the program in coordination with the Greater Cleveland Film Commission and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 209.
"I always tell potential trainees that this is the way to get your foot in the door of Northeast Ohio's film industry," said Lee Will, who oversees Tri-C's training program. "Think of it as auditioning. If you work hard and have the right attitude, these professional instructors will recommend you for hire or hire you on the next project that comes to town."
Training covers essential information that a production assistant will need, such as production department procedures, equipment handling, makeup and costumes, set dressing, props, camera prep, and grip and electric procedures.
Trainees will be hired to work on a short film during the last week of class. They must be available for the full six weeks and be physically capable of lifting and moving heavy objects. All trainees hired will receive a stipend and an IMDb credit.
Graduates of previous workshops find continuous and steady employment in Northeast Ohio's film industry.
The course begins Feb. 28, with instruction and training running 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes will be based at Metro Campus, located at 2900 Community College Ave. in Cleveland. Cost is $2,395, with some scholarships available.
