Resilience and determination help Maria Graciani reach educational milestones
When Maria Graciani left high school early to become a mother, educational milestones like college graduation seemed little more than a distant dream. Feelings of despair and hopelessness were common, especially during her long recovery from a car accident. Graciani remembers the doctors telling her that she might not return to the way she was. At this critical moment, she decided to hatch a different plan — one that involved a new attitude, persistence and a lot of determination. It also involved joining the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) family.
After earning a GED, Graciani knew she was on the path toward a bright future. She saw a Tri-C flyer and decided to visit the Metropolitan campus to learn more about what the College had to offer. Even being stuck in an elevator for 20 minutes during her initial visit couldn’t dampen her passion for further education. “Nothing was going to hold me back,” she said.
Tri-C’s convenience and affordability appealed to Graciani. Scholarships from Tri-C and local nonprofit Esperanza Inc. allowed her to focus on her education without worry. She graduated in Spring 2013 with an Associate of Arts degree and a Distinguished Leadership certificate — the first of many educational achievements.
Realizing she could help others overcome life challenges, Graciani went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from The University of Akron. She now works as an opioid community development specialist for OhioMeansJobs, helping adult and dislocated workers connect to employers and community support services.
Graciani credits the caring staff and encouraging learning community with helping her learn to be persistent and true to herself. “Tri-C helped prepare me for my future by believing in me and allowing me to find my strengths through my struggles,” she said.
Her advice to those considering a Tri-C education: “Have an open mind. Listen. Learn. And watch your future take off.”
