Area of Study: Recording Arts and Technology
Degree/Certificate: Associate of Applied Science in Recording Arts and Technology
Academic School: Creative Arts
The Recording Arts and Technology (RAT) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) leads to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and trains students for a variety of entry‑level positions in the audio industry. The curriculum models educational experiences around real-life projects with professional expectations.
Students receive broad-based training in recording and music production, on-location recording, live sound and event production, music business and audio electronics. Most classes are held in the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts, a world-class facility with seven recording control rooms (each with a different mixing set up) and three music-technology classrooms (with a music-production workstation for each student).
Typical RAT course projects include producing, recording, editing, mixing, audio for video, concert production, on-location recording, business and production plans, and electronics assembly and repair. The program stresses entrepreneurism in the music industry. Many graduates go on to start their own audio service companies.
Students are required to complete prerequisite coursework before beginning their RAT studies.
