Overview

Ready to power up your career? The Utility Technician program meets the rising demand for skilled workers looking to enter or advance in Northeast Ohio’s utility contracting and public utilities industry.

Tri-C is the designated training location for the 16-county region in Northeast Ohio. The program offers hands-on learning in essential areas such as overhead and underground electrical communication, natural gas distribution, wastewater management and water systems. Participants will learn to operate specialized equipment like bucket trucks and directional boring machines, as well as master critical skills in underground utility location and fiber optic technology — all while honing communication, computational and troubleshooting skills.

Additionally, students pursuing the associate degree will have the option to add truck driving instruction to their coursework, preparing them for the Commercial Driver’s License Class A (CDL A) state test.

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-hour training

Certificate of Proficiency

Utilities Safety and Operations Fundamentals
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Holds a valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Has a high school or GED diploma
  • Passes a DOT Physical and drug screen**
  • Passes the basic CDL permit test**

**Applies to the associate degree program

Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce in roles such as field service technician, field installation technician, fiber technician, telecommunication technician and more.

  • The median salary for graduates in this region is $60,000+.
  • The starting salary is $40,000 to $50,000. As the employee gains additional experience and qualifications over time, the salary can increase to $60,000 and up to $85,000.*
  • Jobs are projected to grow regionally by 6% from 2022-2032.
