Important Information About the Rabies Vaccination Requirement
Rabies is a deadly virus transmitted through a bite wound or infected saliva into a wound. Working with any mammal puts a person at risk of contracting this disease. Although this disease is not prevalent in this area, there continue to be confirmed cases of domestic animals with rabies in the region yearly. The prevalence has increased in other areas of Ohio and around the country. Because of the untreatable nature of this disease, the CVTEA/AVMA (accreditation body for the program) requires that you protect yourself with a prophylactic series of injections prior to any handling of animals, which takes place in the first semester of the program. The cost of this series varies and can range from $1,000-$1,350. The student is responsible for this cost. Your personal medical insurance may provide coverage for this vaccine. It is recommended you contact your medical insurance before scheduling an appointment to receive the vaccine(s).
This vaccine can also be acquired at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. Make an appointment here.
For more information about the rabies vaccine series, visit the CDC website.
