Captioning & Court Reporting Program at Tri-C

Court reporting is the profession where individuals utilize a stenotype machine or voicewriting technology to capture all the spoken words in a legal proceeding or other event. These words can be presented on computer or television screens, displaying the instant voice-to-text translation or translated into text on documents such as trial transcripts.

What's Your Choice?
At Cuyahoga Community College you have choices.

Writing Methods: We offer two types of technologies. Machine students may learn to use a stenotype machine and specialized software to type (write) spoken words and have them transferred into text. Voice students learn to use a speech recognition engine and specialized software to listen and repeat (dictate) spoken words and have them transferred into text.

Educational Options: Students have an option to earn an Associate of Applied Business Degree. Previously degreed students may elect to complete only those courses which meet NCRA guidelines. Students also have a choice to earn a Court Reporting Technologies Short-term Certificate leading to employment opportunities for scopists or transcriptionists in court reporting firms, doctor's offices, or as an independent contractor. Once completed, students may then go on to complete a specialized concentration of courses earning a Captioning and CART Short-Term Certificate leading to employment as a broadcast captioner or CART provider.

Location Options: Steno students have the choice to learn entirely online, on the campus, or a combination of both. Voice students learn entirely online. Visit our distance learning page.
