Mammography Short Term Certificate Program
Area of Study: Mammography
Degree/Certificate: Short-Term Certificate
Academic School: Nursing and Health Professions
The mammography short term certificate program provides an opportunity for radiologic technologists registered in radiography to obtain education and clinical training in mammography. The mammographer specializes in imaging the breast to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. The curriculum consists of on-line instruction as well as off-campus clinical rotations at affiliated healthcare institutions. Those successfully completing the training will be eligible for advanced level certification in mammography through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The on-line courses fulfill the "structured education" requirement as defined by the ARRT.
Contact the Financial Aid Office regarding certificate eligibility.
Program Overview
The mammography program is a two-semester, short-term certificate program. The fall semester consists of five, one-credit online courses scheduled consecutively. The spring semester consists of two, one-credit online courses scheduled consecutively and a three-credit clinical practicum at one of the program's sixteen clinical affiliates in the northeastern Ohio area. The clinical practicum requires 16 clinical hours per week. An option may be available to students unable to complete 16 hours every week. Contact the Program Director at (216) 987-5264 for additional information.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to the mammography program must first complete the general admission application to Cuyahoga Community College. Former Cuyahoga Community College students should contact the Enrollment Center at (800) 954-8742 to reactivate their student record or reapply, if advised. Applicants to the program must be registered and licensed radiographers as evidenced by ARRT certification and an Ohio radiographic license. In addition to meeting these professional requirements, acceptance into the program is contingent on the results of the required background check. The college's determination of acceptable background check results for the purposes of acceptance into the educational program does not guarantee a similar determination by other entities (i.e. clinical affiliates, future employers, and/or professional certifying organizations [i.e. American Registry of Radiologic Technologists]). Some clinical affiliates may also require a drug screen prior to clinical placement.
Documentation of good health, immunizations, health insurance and CPR for the healthcare provider through the American Heart Association is required prior to clinical assignment. Students accepted into the program will be notified by the program when they should begin collecting and submitting this documentation. Students will be dismissed from the program if significant limiting health conditions are present which prevent the student from performing the normal functions of a student mammographer and/or constitute a hazard to the health or safety of patients. Students will be expected to perform the essential functions of a mammography student.
Applicants should contact the program director via the email address below to express interest and submit a copy of their American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification card and a copy of their Ohio radiologic license. Students are admitted on a rolling basis. The program admits, on average, 20 students each fall semester. The number of students admitted is determined by the number of available clinical spaces. Meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee immediate admission to the program because the number of applicants may exceed clinical space availability.
Program Status
The Mammography Program is now accepting for Fall 2024.
