||As graduation from St. Joseph Academy grew near, Laura Desler thought more and more about her next educational steps. Desler knew college was a must but paying for it would not be easy. Her best option was enrolling at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) and in the fall after graduation, she began classes on the Western Campus.
|“The teachers were wonderful,” said Desler. “The classes were challenging as well as informative. I made a great choice.”
Mindful of the desire to transfer to a four-year institution, Desler chose her classes carefully with good advice from College counselors. After attending Tri-C for two years, during which she also worked full time at May Co., Desler transferred to Ohio University. She graduated two years later with a bachelor’s degree in business.
Having worked in retail sales during the college years, Desler determined that a management position in retail was not for her and instead looked to a career in human resources. Jobs at an employment agency and a bank followed before Desler found an HR position with Gray Drug Stores, where she stayed for more than three years.
Desler moved on to an HR job with another longtime Cleveland icon, Broadview Savings and Loan, while she attended Baldwin Wallace College (now University). Shortly after Desler earned her MBA from BW, she and her husband started their family and she took a part-time job as a nurse recruiter for St. John Westshore Hospital.
As the family grew, Desler worked for 13 years as HR manager for Phoenix Products, a plumbing products manufacturer in Avon. In 2008, Desler became manager of Penton Media’s HR department, a position she still holds.
Desler enjoys the work at Penton Media, which publishes both print and electronic magazines, journals and digests for a multitude of industries. “Every day is different,” said Desler. “I do not just work on recruitment, but also on strategic development for the company as it relates to HR, policy development, performance reviews, employee relations and much more.”
Desler also has earned the designation of Senior Professional in Human Resources from the Society for Human Resources.
Tri-C receives high marks from Desler for starting her on the path to a successful career. “It all began for me when I started at Tri-C and received encouragement, guidance and insightful teaching,” said Desler. “Tri-C is a great place to start your college education.”
