Information Technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

Information technology encompasses many aspects of computing and technology. The information technology covers many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems. Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Presumably, when speaking of Information Technology (IT) as a whole, it is noted that the use of computers and information are associated.

Program Updates

* Application Specialist Program has been re-named Administrative Office Systems and assigned a new subject code (AOS).   Students currently in the program can complete the Application Specialist degree through Summer 2012, utilizing the AOS coursework, as all ITAP coursework has been moved under the new subject area.   Current students who do not anticipate completing by Summer 2012 should see a counselor to discuss changing their major to the new Administrative Office Systems and completing under that program’s Administrative Office Specialist option.

** Mainframe Programming concentration has been deleted.   This program has not been accepting new students since Fall 2008 and any student in the program who is still working to complete this degree must complete it by Summer 2012.   No degrees will be issued from the IT-Mainframe Programming concentration after that date.   Students still working to complete this program should contact the IT department for advising.

** Web Page Development and Maintenance concentration has been deleted.  Much of the core curriculum from this program has been absorbed into the Information Technology – Programming and Development program.   New students interested in pursuing careers in this field should enroll in the IT- Programming and Development program.   Students currently in the IT – Web Page Development and Maintenance program can complete this degree through Summer 2012.   If current students do not anticipate completing prior to Summer 2012, they should see a counselor to discuss transitioning to the IT – Programming and Development program.
